We focus on meeting people where they are, whether that’s through one-on-one coaching, virtual support, or transitional housing advocacy.

We also emphasize equity and accessibility, serving diverse populations including those impacted by incarceration, poverty, and systemic barriers to care. Our approach blends professional certification with lived experience, making our support both effective and deeply personal. It's not just about sobriety—it's about building sustainable, empowered lives.

Lighthouse Beginnings

LHB came to life when we became a 501(c)(3) in 2020. We built a board of directors of people in recovery. LHB launched for the purpose of assisting and empowering individuals to remove the roadblocks experienced while in the recovery process.

LHB was developed and continues to be managed by individuals with lived experience, education, diverse backgrounds, and different pathways of recovery. We have locations in Brainerd and in Minneapolis, trying to expand our reach to those who face recovery daily, know people in recovery, face homelessness, or have been wrongly incarcerated.

Our Approach

Peer support encompasses a range of activities and interactions between people who share similar experiences of being diagnosed with mental health conditions, substance use disorders, or both. This mutuality is often called “peerness” — a connection between a peer support worker and a person in or seeking recovery that promotes connection and inspires hope.

Peer support offers a level of acceptance, understanding, and validation not found in many other professional relationships. By sharing their own lived experience and practical guidance, peer support workers help people develop goals, create strategies for self-empowerment, and take steps toward building fulfilling, self-determined lives through individualized wellness plans.

Recovery month public events

Mission Restart hosts several annual and monthly events that are open to the public and centered around recovery, connection, and community education:

  • Ride for Recovery (July): This annual motorcycle ride brings together riders, recovery allies, and community members to raise awareness and funds for recovery support services. The event includes a scenic group ride, guest speakers, food, raffles, and live music. It’s a powerful display of unity and strength in recovery.
  • Echoes of Silence: Overdose Awareness Event (August 31st): Held on international overdose awareness day, this event honors lives lost to overdose and uplifts those still fighting. It features candlelight vigils, powerful stories from survivors and families, resource booths, and cultural healing practices.
  • Walk for Recovery (September): Our community walk coincides with national recovery month. It celebrates the journey of recovery and reduces stigma through visibility and storytelling. Participants join in walking, sharing, and accessing community resources in a welcoming, family-friendly environment.

In addition to our annual events, we now host monthly recovery-centered events made possible through opioid settlement funds from Itasca County. These events include peer-led wellness workshops, sober gatherings, seasonal activities, and culturally specific healing spaces that help individuals stay connected and supported throughout the year.

Each event is peer-led and provides meaningful opportunities for those in recovery to volunteer, lead, and rebuild their sense of purpose and community.

MN Prevention & Recovery Alliance

In 2021, the MN Prevention & Recovery Alliance (MnPRA) was established as a standalone 501(c)(3) organization to enhance and expand prevention and recovery services in Minnesota. MnPRA took over operations of Know The Truth™ Prevention Program and other recovery programs to increase their impact under a statewide recovery community organization.

Since 2022, MnPRA has been a credentialed statewide recovery community organization, offering prevention and peer recovery support services to youth and adults throughout Minnesota. We collaborate with service providers, recovery organizations, and community leaders to provide a network of resources and support for those impacted by substance use and related issues.

Will Work for Recovery

Established in 2016 as an alternative space for recovery. We didn’t know what we were doing, but we wanted a healing and working place for justice‑involved individuals. I cooked every night through food donations around the city. We introduced the organization to state prisons, jails, and treatment centers across the state.

We became an RCO in 2020, through ARCO when I discovered we were already doing what an RCO does! We invited an LADC, a financial manager, and other recovering individuals onto the board. We have grown tremendously over the past 9 years.
